How to engage your para-sympathetic nervous system

Feeling stressed, tired, lacking energy and feel like you are always on the run?

Often our sympathetic nervous system is responsible for getting you into this state. It’s a protective state which in caveman times was responsible for keeping you safe from a constant threat of harm.

Unfortunately, in the modern age it can sometimes work against us by becoming overactive and constantly triggering a fight or flight mode, stimulating your adrenals and leading to fatigue.

So how do we remedy this?

Sympathetic nervous system VS Para-sympathetic nervous system

 Unlike the sympathetic nervous system when the Para-sympathetic nervous system is activated we can experience a reduction in our breathing and heart rate, our blood pressure can reduce, emotional intensity can decrease, and even our digestion can improve.

Engaging the para-sympathetic nervous system is a great way to help turn off the fight or flight section of your brain without always reaching for that glass of wine.

Here are some great ways to help reduce stress and engage the para-sympathetic nervous system…

  • Breath meditation- deep abdominal breathing
  • Spend time in nature
  • Practice wellness activities- reiki, yoga, mediation
  • Soak in a warm bath
  • Enjoy a nutrient packed meal
  • Practice a stretch routine
  • Enjoy a massage or Facial Treatment
